About a month ago now I put out a really powerful article, “Could It REALLY Have All Been a Lie”, that spoke on the newly found benefits of Cannabis and the CBD’s (Cannabidiol) derived from the ever so controversial Hemp plant. The article got a lot of attention as it brought to light some of the reasons Marijuana/Hemp/Cannabis had been outlawed, the many uses that science and modern medicine are finding that it actually helps with or resolves and the fact that it is slowly becoming legal and accepted in many countries as well as allowed by many sports organizations around the world.
Since the major benefits are being delivered from the CBD oils and put into various delivery vehicles – chews, pills, sprays, drops etc. I thought I would do some digging to learn more about cannabidiol and CBD’s. What I found was that CBD’s are not the only beneficial “oil” and are only one piece of a very large puzzle. So I turned to a friend who has been involved with “Essential Oils” for quite a while and has a vast knowledge of these products, how they work, why they work, who should and should not be using them and of course where to get them. (This is a big business and you can really get ripped off a bit if you don’t take the time to be educated on your suppliers!)
In this first part of my two part interview with Adventure Athlete, Woman on a Mission, Business Builder, Eater of Healthy Foods and IRONMAN Triathlete Kristyn Tobey (for more about Kristyn, read the short bio at the bottom of the article) I ask Kristyn a compilation of questions that actually came via direct message or email after my Cannabis/CBD article. Take the time to read it, then use the links and information provided to see if this is a path to better health and more fulfilling life you would like to take for you and your family.
Take time to learn, START HERE -> (My questions are in ” ” and Kristyn’s answers are in Italics)
“Kristyn, let’s start by looking at what essential oils are and why they have become such a hot topic over the past 10 years or so (really popular in recent months) for athletes of all ages as well as people searching for alternatives to prescription medications and all of their burdensome side effects?”
It is true that essential oils are gaining popularity as more and more people become frustrated with the ill effects of prescription medications. However, it is good to note that essential oils have been in use for well over 5,000 years as a natural medicine. In 2500 BC, the Chinese identified medicinal uses for over 300 different plants. This is around the same time that the Egyptians and Greeks also recognized the healing and beneficial properties of plants.
So, what are they and why do they work? Essential oils are the highly concentrated version of the natural oils in plants. The oils are extracted (including the seeds, bark, leaves, stems, roots flowers and fruit) through distillation, cold pressing or resin tapping. The essential oil constituents are small in molecular size and are lipid (fat) soluble, which allows many of them to easily penetrate the skin as well as the membranes of our cells. Because of this, essential oils have the potential to affect every cell in the body within twenty minutes and then be metabolized like other nutrients.
The end results? You have a natural “life force” of the plant acting quickly and effectively to heal, sooth or rejuvenate you with very little, if any, side effects.
“Kristyn, the little back story there gives us much clearer picture as to the where these came from. I know modern medicine has been looking with a very watchful eye to see how people are educating themselves to these products and beginning to actually get off or stop using many prescription medications because of the healing properties these essential oils have. That’s really cool!
Here lately, Hemp, Cannabis or Marijuana – depending on who you speak with about the topic, it can get confusing with all of the names – and the Cannabidiol or CBD’s that can be extracted from the plants, have been making headlines in many health circles. In a conversation you and I had prior to this interview, you revealed some really interesting facts about cannabinoids, cannabis, and the abundance of CBD’s from other natural sources. Some of these sources actually contain a much HIGHER concentration of cannabinoids (CBD’s) than what you can get from Hemp. Can you share a bit of that with us?”
CBD (Cannabidiol) has been getting a lot of attention lately and for good reason. CBD’s is a substance being used by many health professionals, patients, and athletes to help combat anxiety, infections, chronic pain, PTSD, rheumatoid arthritis and many, many, many other ailments. However, legality, purity and potency get in the way of many people realizing any real relief from CBD’s derived from Hemp. CBD’s derived from Marijuana might also contain THC and or heavy metals, depending on the soil it was grown in and the extraction techniques used.
Interestingly enough, the compound that makes cannabis so therapeutic is the “beta-caryophyllene” (BCP). The BCP levels in CBD oil is about 35%… As a completely legal alternative, Copaiba (Copaifera reticulate) essential oil has a BCP content of 55% – with no worries about unwanted other compounds like THC or any heavy metals… plus LEGAL and without controversy everywhere.
Remember, I do what I do to help people live healthier, longer, more productive and fulfilling lives, here is something you REALLY need to know as you get REAL with me here… If you want access to similar health benefits as those provided by cannabinoids, without the risk of heavy metals or unwanted other compounds like THC, a bottle of Copaiba costs $40. Compare that to the same size 15 ml bottle of CBD oil which sells on average for $120… Education is key or you could be spending way more money than necessary and only getting a fraction of the benefits!
Now, I have given and made some really forceful statements and I don’t want anyone to think I am just throwing things out there or that I am down on CBD’s and all the uses and benefits we are finding them to have. I have provided Bryan with a link to a really powerful pharmacology article that I subscribe to, this article will provide you with more in depth information on the products mentioned above and back up the information given here.
WOW! I am sure that we all have a LOT to learn about these compounds, but what I am learning here so far is really clearing up some of the hype. New products always get a lot of press, wading through and finding the truth is always time consuming but it eventually happens. In this case I feel CBD’s are here to stay and that research will continue to show us more and more benefits and uses as well as the value and benefits that they provide. However, like I said in the beginning of this article, CBD’s are one piece in a giant puzzle. To understand the puzzle and yourself better sounds like the key to knowing and using these products properly.
“With that said, who should consider beginning an essential oil regimen and how would someone go about getting started off on the right path?”
Whether you are a parent, child, athlete or couch potato, you can and will benefit from swapping conventional products with pure therapeutic grade essential oils. Whether you want to run faster, recover better, reduce illness, increase focus, brighten your mood, or just simply FEEL like the best you that you can… An essential oils regimen will set you up for success from the moment you wake up.
While we cannot control all the toxins in our environment, we can control a lot of the items in our homes. By choosing products made with essential oils and by using essential oils, we can significantly lower the accumulation of toxins on a daily basis. When we have a lower toxic load in and on our bodies, we are better able to perform, adapt and recover. This leads not to only better performance as an athlete, but more mental clarity at work, a more positive attitude with your family and an overall sense of balance and health.
Getting started is simple… Start by swapping out your traditional “medicine cabinet” for a more natural cabinet of mother nature’s essential oils. Instead of grabbing a pill when you have a headache, try an essential oil. When your muscles are achy and sore, or you have a bruise or cut, try using a natural essential oil. When you do, be sure to watch and take note of how your pain decreases and your wounds heal. Add some essential oils to your water to support healthy digestion and immunity. Diffuse some oils in you desk in a diffuser to increase focus and lower stress. Rub some essential oils on the bottom of you feet and the back of your neck as you prepare for bed. We have a phrase that says, “There’s an oil for that!” So whatever you feel like you need support with, mental or physical, look to mother nature first and try an essential oil.
Just 3 simple questions and a ton of value in Kristyn’s answers! I am going to wrap up this first part with this, these products are not new. In fact as Kristyn has shared, they have been around for thousands of years but suppressed by our pharmaceutical companies that provide us with many, many, many very important and in some cases, life saving drugs. However, mother nature also gave us remedy and cure and we need to take note of what Kristyn has shared. Life is precious and short, if living better, healthier and a more fulfilling life is important to you, let your journey begin here.
Kristyn’s information and short bio are at the bottom of this article and will also be included again on the summary to this interview. Use the information, get with Kristyn and ENJOY LIFE!
